Hummingbird® High-Graphic Packaging: Prioritizing Sustainability
You care about sustainability, and we do, too. Hummingbird’s high-graphic packaging offers compelling sustainability advantages.
Reduced Waste
Compared to alternative printing methods, Hummingbird’s digital pre-print process reduces production waste as well as tooling costs, time and resources. Traditional methods use printing plates, which can cost thousands of dollars and need to be replaced or changed.
Hummingbird’s printing process enables the use of lightweight production materials. The digital pre-print process also eliminates waste from the multiple press runs often needed with traditional print methods to help ensure that color, quality, etc., align with customer specifications.
Furthermore, with digital print, there’s no need for customers to perform in-person press checks. Hummingbird can run several samples to send to the customer for review, reducing waste, travel costs and CO2 emissions. These samples come off the same press and utilize the same paper and same inks as the production order. What you see is what you’ll get!
Optimized Orders
The Hummingbird digital pre-print solution for high-graphic packaging provides for lower minimum orders. It also allows for the combining of a variety of SKUs on a single print run, giving customers the flexibility to order what they need, when they need it. This solution helps utilize less warehouse space, minimize inventory obsolescence and deliver on companies’ lean manufacturing goals.
Responsibly Sourced
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) certified sourcing label (SFI-00007) substantiates that the packaging on which Hummingbird prints uses fiber from responsible and ethical sources. See Georgia-Pacific’s certification status here.
GP’s due diligence system includes:
- Building relationships with suppliers and knowing, down to the county level, where those vendors are sourcing fiber.
- Incorporating GP’s responsible sourcing expectations into its purchase contracts.
- Evaluating risk levels and public concerns about harvesting practices outside of the United States.
Aqueous Inks
Hummingbird uses water-based pigment inks designed to address a broad range of environmental and health considerations throughout the entire life cycle of a print from production to disposal. The inks are free of Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs) and are safe for printing on nonfood contact surfaces for secondary corrugated packaging, requiring no additional barriers.
With these aqueous inks, Hummingbird digitally printed packaging integrates seamlessly into corrugated recycling streams and is regarded as widely recyclable.
